The large high-pressure air mass spread a chill through the upper Ohio valley and into the northern Appalachians. Early morning temperatures dropped to about 10 degrees in New York State and the upper Great Lakes region. The mercury was in the 20s in Ohio, the mid-Mississippi valley and north central Texas.

It was a sudden jolt for most easterners. Only 24 hours earlier, morning temperatures were in the 50s in the Ohio valley. However, as the front moved eastward, rainy weather diminished. A few showers dampened the area from the Louisiana gulf to Tennessee and Kentucky, and parts of Virginia and Southern Maryland.
