Check out which units you can newly field in Dragon Dawn
The Age of Wonders 4: Dragon Dawn DLC not only adds two new Tomes of Magic and Race Transformations to the turn-based strategy game, but also comes with a variety of brand-new units you can recruit for your armies. As the name suggests, Dragon Dawn is all about scaly, fire-breathing flyers – a fine addition to any military force, but especially fitting to escort your powerful and majestic Ancient Dragon, the new ruler type introduced by the DLC.
Some of the units coming into the game with Dragon Dawn feature a new mechanic as well – Evolution. They’ll start out as weak and inexperienced units and then grow into stronger troop variants upon reaching a certain rank.
Here are all the new units in Age of Wonders 4: Dragon Dawn and how to get them.
Age of Wonders 4: Dragon Dawn – new units
Slither Hatchling (Skirmisher), Tier I
The Slither Hatchling becomes available through the Tome of Evolution and is the first unit to use the Evolution mechanic. It has a physical melee attack as well as a poisonous ranged attack. Its grown-up version is the Slither. You can recruit Slither Hatchlings in your cities.
Slither (Skirmisher), Tier III
The Slither is the fully evolved version of the Slither Hatchling. It retains the physical melee attack and poisonous ranged attack of its predecessor, but is much tougher and stronger overall. It’s a useful unit to have in your arsenal.
Wyvern Fledgling (Fighter), Tier I
The Wyvern Fledgling is another unit unlocked through the Tome of Evolution, though it can’t be recruited in cities and must instead be summoned through a world map spell. It’s a simple and relatively weak melee unit that grows into an adult wyvern unit upon reaching the Champion rank.
Gold Wyvern (Fighter), Tier III
Wyvern Fledglings eventually grow into Gold, Obsidian, Fire, or Frost Wyverns. They are solid, if not outstanding melee units, and can be useful for factions that require Animal units to trigger a set of combat buffs. Their color mainly changes the damage resistances they have, but do come with small doses of elemental damage on their melee attacks. Wyverns can be recruited in cities with a new special province improvement, the Wyvern Eyrie.
Obsidian Wyvern (Fighter), Tier III
Wyvern Fledglings eventually grow into Gold, Obsidian, Fire, or Frost Wyverns. They are solid, if not outstanding melee units, and can be useful for factions that require Animal units to trigger a set of combat buffs. Their color mainly changes the damage resistances they have, but do come with small doses of elemental damage on their melee attacks. Wyverns can be recruited in cities with a new special province improvement, the Wyvern Eyrie.
Young Fire Dragon (Fighter), Tier III
Young Dragons are unlocked through the Tome of Dragons and can be produced in cities, their color depending on your empire’s Affinities. You can always get Fire and Frost Dragons, though. They have claw and tail attacks, but can’t command a breath weapon yet. For that, they’ll have to gain ranks and grow into regular adult dragons.
Young Frost Dragon (Fighter), Tier III

Golden Dragon (Mythic), Tier V
Alongside Fire and Frost Dragons, which were in the base game already, Golden and Obsidian Dragons are some of the most fearsome creatures you can field. Armed with claws and a tail and coated in protective scales, these adult dragons are powerful melee fighters. In addition to these lethal tools they now have access to their breath weapon to rain elemental destruction on their foes.
Obsidian Dragon (Mythic), Tier V
Alongside Fire and Frost Dragons, which were in the base game already, Golden and Obsidian Dragons are some of the most fearsome creatures you can field. Armed with claws and a tail and coated in protective scales, these adult dragons are powerful melee fighters. In addition to these lethal tools they now have access to their breath weapon to rain elemental destruction on their foes.
